Gotland Runt is one of the most famous and oldest regattas in the world, where around 300 sailing yachts participate every year. Officially the first race around Gotland was organized in 1937 by KSSS (Kungliga Svenska Segelsällskapet), where only 42 yachts participated from Sweden, Germany, Poland, Finland, Lithuania, England and the United States. Today, the competition has evolved into one of the largest seascape races in the world, with the total of 350 nautical miles in length and close to a half a million visitors and spectators during the event!The Gotland Runt (‘Round Gotland’) or the ÅF Offshore Race is an eye-catching event, with a fleet of sleek sailing vessels moored around the small Stockholm island of Skeppsholmen prior to the start. The yachts move then to the Sandhamn island where they start, sail through the archipelago and head out to the Baltic Sea. On the way home, the boats get to strategically choose whether they want Gotska Sandön on port or starboard.
Most yachts expect about two to three days at sea, but of course with a good boat the route can be more fun!
